The history of the word “emo” is a pretty interesting one and if you want to understand anything about the emo scene I suggest you listen up. It started as as a genre of music that originated from hardcore punk and pop punk in the late eighties and then mixed with other music genres later, namely indie in the nineties. Since about 2000 it has gradually become the meaning we give it today which isnt totally connected to music anymore, but is now a part of fashion and even a word to describe ‘emotional’ people who often wear dark clothing, tight t-shirts, have straight black hair and dark makeup.

While I do think some of the emo clothes look quite cool in a way, I never really understood why people buy them. At school (in England at least) emos were not exactly held in high regard… in fact they were generally picked on, so quite why anyone would deliberatly search for ‘girl emo clothes’ is beyond me. I always thought peoples natural fashion sense ended with them being labelled an emo, I suppose originally that was the way.
